Department of Dental Materials

The Department of Dental Materials at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Khyber Medical University, is dedicated to postgraduate education, innovative research and development in dental materials, biomaterials and related technologies.

Dental Materials is an interdisciplinary field integrating dentistry with materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering and biological sciences. The Department focuses on understanding the composition, properties, manipulation, biological interactions and clinical performance of materials used in preventive, restorative and prosthetic dentistry.

The Department offers MPhil and PhD programs in Dental Materials and provides postgraduate scholars with advanced theoretical knowledge, laboratory training and opportunities for interdisciplinary research.

A major research facility of the Department is the Dental Material Characterization Laboratory (DMCL), established to facilitate advanced characterization, testing and development of dental and biomedical materials.

Vision

To become a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence in dental materials and biomaterials education, research, innovation and translation, contributing to improved oral healthcare through the development and evaluation of safe, effective and sustainable materials.

Mission

To provide high-quality postgraduate education and research training in dental materials and biomaterials through interdisciplinary teaching, advanced laboratory-based research and innovation.

The Department aims to develop competent academics and researchers capable of advancing dental materials science, developing indigenous biomaterials, strengthening academia-industry collaboration and addressing the oral healthcare needs of Pakistan.

Dental Material Characterization Laboratory (DMCL)

The Dental Material Characterization Laboratory provides infrastructure for postgraduate research, material development and characterization. The facility supports MPhil and PhD research as well as interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects.

The laboratory facilitates research involving the development and evaluation of dental materials and biomaterials, including restorative materials, polymers, composites, impression materials, dental stones, bleaching/whitening materials, bone substitutes and other experimental biomaterials.

Other equipment/facilities should be added from the current departmental laboratory inventory before uploading the final website profile, particularly SEM, XRD, UV-Vis, hardness testing, pH measurement, sonication and other equipment where departmental ownership/access needs to be distinguished.
